If you have an interview coming up, you need to stand out. Don't pull out the black pant suit again; that's what your competition is wearing! But there's no need to buy something new either...resist the urge to justify the shopping...especially if you're unemployed.
Interview Apparel 101
Start with the basics; neutrals are the norm but you can still sauce it up a little. Instead of black plants try navy or white. Not khaki unless the interview is with Bass Pro Shops.
I say pants and not a skirt; a skirt on an interview appears like your ready to get someone coffee. That may be an overly feminist statement but hey, you also don't want to be anyone's bitch. Pants also allow you to wear a more stylish heel giving a little extra appeal to a plain suit.
The Tailored White Shirt. It's been on every runway in every season since the beginning of fashion. There is a reason for this! Grab a white shirt with some sharp details; french cuffs, moderate pleats or ruffles down the front or change up the fabric (silk blend, cotton pique)...just not all 3 at once please.Accessorize!
Find the now trend that is also classic and tailor it to the situation. Some jobs that are in the creative world let you work accessories more than others; I once wore large amethyst necklace to a fashion house and it was totally appropriate. I love the return to feminine details. If the white shirt is structured (not ruffled) then bows, cameos, soft scarves. If the shirt is more detailed look for pearls in grey, black or golden hues. These are all great accents to a power suit....and where to put your keys, wallet, lipstick and 2 copies of your resume? I suggest a flat satchel or messenger bag with limited details.
If you're going to spend a little on the look, this is the place to do it - low cost, big bang. You don't even need to go beyond your weekly Target shopping.

You have an audience at an interview; know them! Uncover everything you can about the culture of the company and dress to solicit that audience. I once read that the #1 reason employers choose a certain candidate is their chemistry during the interview. Your style is the first impression of that chemistry to land the job.
