1. Any costume with wings...dark angel, good angel, fairy....
2. Guy dressed as a Girl. (you're a dude. you're wearing a dress. you're so funny).3. School girl/Sexy Kitty/Naughty Nurse
4. Complex, over-engineered black thing (darth vader/demon/transformer) where you will never meet the person hiding inside of it; which is ok because it's usually a total nerd anyways.
5. Wonder Woman - oy! A bad memory for me from childhood when my mother dressed my in UnderRoos to make this costume.
I do appreciate the efforts but I'm personally not a fan of played out, fussy, or naughty nurse costumes either. So, if your like-minded pulling your look together on this particular night can be a bit of a challenge.
Check my stylistic ideas to look festive, feel comfortable and be noticed without wearing fishnets or crimping your budget.
- A simple black mask
- Wear your best "yes, i've got a great hiney" jeans.
- Colorful blouse; I love the romantic bright floral prints!
- Patent black leather platform heals.
- Beauty Routine - Wear your signature going out on the town make-up; I still love the smokey eyes but with a bit of gold (Laura Mercier has a great liner for this; I use Black Gold.). For hair, a messy updo or mufassa mane to add a bit of wild-side chic.
Add your black mask and you are ready to conduct some black magic!
- Costume Contact Lenses - I absolutely LOVE these!
- Choose a color or multi of your choice; There is everything from Michael Jackson's Triller eyes to Ice Blue Pale.
- Play up some fun make-up with these. Draw designs on your face with some racy colors from MAC.
- You can keep the look simple chic as above but this time change to an Elegant Black shirt; it's all about your face so don't distract from that.
- Beauty routine - Apply some styling gel and sleek hair back. Short hair can be piecey at the ends. Long hair pull into a sleek pony tail at the nape of the neck.
Meow Meow! Sexy kitties got nothin' on you!
- Mens Wear! - remember how ridiculous a guy dressed as a girl can be? Not true when it's the reverse. The runway for Spring 2010 is chock full of great Katherine Hepburn menswear. So this is indeed one of my favorite costumes...Plus I can't help but want to sing Britney Spears "Womanizer" for some reason...
- Basic White Shirt
- Fitted Black Vest (not loose)
- Black Pants; Palazzos work the best
- Fedora Hat (also a must have for Spring 2010)
- Tie (optional)
- Fake mustache from a costume shop for $1.99. If you want to make this funny, you could use white face paint and paint on a Milk Mustache.
- Penny loafers
- Beauty Routine - Keep make-up simple, use a mineral based make-up and cheek stain on just the apples for a flushed glow. Do accentuate the lashes; make no mistake you are all girl! Hair - long hair should be worn down with flowing curls (iron or natural). Short hair, any way you like - have fun with it.
Think Demi Moore in Strip Tease; her menswear look was the best thing about that movie. Putting these clothes on for Halloween is way hotter than the girls that have resorted to taking clothes off.
Most of these can be done on the cheap thank goodness. Black mask for instance is $2.50! That leaves me $16.00 for the $2.00 draft special at my favorite local establishment, Anvil to shake-off therapy from the Wonder Woman memory.
